Despite Police Restrictions Sikhs Continue in Force at Tarn Taran

TARN TARAN, Punjab — Despite Police restrictions, Sikh protesters continued to demonstrate at Harike bridge for 10th consecutive day against the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib today.

The determination shown by the Sikh protesters has raised concerns for administration which is imposing various restrictions to ensure failure of the agitation.

The protesters had been reiterating their demand of the reinstatement of the Panj Pyaras of Akal Takht Sahib. They alleged that the Police had installed barricades on both sides of the bridge and was not allowing their supporters to reach the place where dharna was being undertaken.

They said, “Such tricks cannot stop us to continue our struggle for restoration of respect and dignity of Guru Granth Sahib and Sikh principles violated by ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and the SGPC.”

At the Tarn Taran dharna which entered it’s 8th day, an Akhand Path Sahib was ongoing, with it’s bhog ceremony to be performed on Sunday. Due to the Akhand Path Sahib, sizeable number of Sikh devotees including women is making their presence on dharna. More devotees are likely to attend Bhog ceremony.

Security has been beefed up around both dharanas. Personnel of Punjab Police and Border Security Force (BSF) have been deployed in sizeable numbers. In addition, security has been tightened at key locations throughout the district in view of the tense atmosphere.
